Once in a while, we come across a local-product that makes us a believer in the future of Sabah as a food manufacturer for the export market. When we tasted these humble sticks of frozen delights called Taluwang Super Ice-Cream Potong, we had to share just why they deserve to have a mention. You may be wondering what they are?

Ice-cream Potong is a local popsicle made from coconut milk and local flavors. It literally translates to “cut ice-cream.” They were made in huge blocks, then cut into rectangular popsicle shapes with sticks inserted as a handle for individual consumption. In the old days, motorcycle vendors rode around with a portable cooler to sell this frozen confection to anyone who wanted some.

People ate ice-cream potong as a means to cool down from the tropical heat. Moreover, it was much lighter because they are made from coconut milk (santan) instead of dairy. They were also cheaper because coconuts were aplenty in Malaysia, whereas the masses could not afford to buy dairy products, which were often imported from overseas.

FLAVORS
Taluwang makes them very well and it costs ridiculously cheap. At RM 1.30 per stick (US 0.40/26P), you can have dessert for 10 people for under 15 ringgit. Read: Ohmigads cheap! They have gone on to produce and package this lovely snack in at least 10 flavors, all in colorful, hygienic wrappers that look kind of Superhero-Cheesy!

My favorite wrapper is the durian and mango, where they have cartoon Sumazau dancers. It just doesn’t get any cuter and more Sabahan than that!

We feel that many people don’t realize just how much this product speaks about our culinary heritage. The Yam flavor was possibly inspired by Bubur Cha Cha, and the Red Bean definitely borrows its taste from Chinese Red Bean Soup. Corn flavor probably was invented during the Yu Yu Ice era, and the use of endemic fruits like Jackfruit, Cempedak and Durian (to name a few) is like experiencing the Bornean fruit market on sticks.

We bought and finished 40 sticks over three weeks, and the jury all agree that it tastes SUPER like it claims!

But don’t take our word for it. Even the Hong Kong film industry loves it! With Taluwang ice-cream potong in the house, we don’t have to go to Manila to get the coconut-based Selecta ice cream anymore. We have our own!

WHERE TO BUY
You can get them at Pick N Pay in Foh Sang. Enjoy!
